Supremacy Era Timeline


The Supremacy Era has evolved out of technological innovations and geopolitical events on Earth during the 21st and 22nd centuries. The following timeline highlights significant events throughout this period.

2020 - 2039

Race to Mars

Elon Musk's companies spanned the Earth, establishing widespread electrification of transport, high-frequency space travel and renewable energy grids.

StarLink was Earth’s first major network of satellites, which, combined with GPS and Galileo systems, created a fully integrated satellite communications system. This was regarded by some as a forerunner to GABS, the Global Autonomous Broadcasting System.

The Second Space Race was now in full swing, with the European Space Agency, NASA, JAXA, and the companies later led by X Æ A-12 Musk building the infrastructure for space exploration, with all eyes on Mars.

One of the most noteworthy discoveries of this era was the development of instantaneous communication over vast distances, using two quantum computers to entangle fixed phenomena in space to provide lossless communication across millions of kilometers. The connection was made between ATHENA-1, based in Geneva, and ATHENA-2, based on the UN facility on the Moon.

2040 - 2054

First Mars Colony Era

A coordinated global effort by major aerospace manufacturers, and the United Nations, led to the first colony on Mars on the Amazonis Plantia Plains, in the vicinity of Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the solar system.

The mission of the UN Mars Program was to establish an international presence on the red planet and investigate the potential for mineral extraction and terraforming for future human settlement. To assist with the program, the UN donated ATHENA-3, an AI-capable quantum computer, whose focus was to assist colonists with solving the myriad of challenges.

The journey to Mars took approximately nine months and included a perilous descent onto the Martian surface, with many early attempts ending in failure and death. Establishing human habitation also became difficult due to the toxic sands of the surface, the lower gravity, and three alien diseases that almost decimated the population.

The expeditions were proving to be expensive for the UN, accounting for 27% of its expenditure. At its peak in 2045, Mars was home to 1,287 human colonists who mostly lived underground, but by 2051, it was estimated that only 32 colonists remained alive.

In 2052, the UN voted to abandon its Mars program. In its place, the UN issued the first 25-year private charter to Red Earth Corporation, to continue mining exploration operations.


The Helios Coronal Mass Ejection

On January 17, 2055, a solar coronal mass ejection was detected by the James Webb 3 Telescope, with solar plasma emanating from the surface of the Sun, causing an electromagnetic shock wave traveling at 32,000 kilometers a second, reaching Earth in seven days. Upon reaching Earth, the event would disrupt the planet’s electromagnetic field, affecting every electronic device on the planet.

In the seven-day lead-up to the impact on Earth, some governments used the short window to prepare, while other regions descended into fighting and chaos. Two days before the main event, skies across the world were covered in bright auroras.

Upon impact, mass blackouts occurred with computer servers blanked out in an instant. The automated systems entrusted to control much of developed society went offline forever, including controls for water systems, power grids, food production, transportation, and telecommunications.

Within three months, close to 12% of the human population had died due to civil panic, starvation, and lack of water - with the death toll quickly mounting in highly populated regions. Trade and production slowed to a crawl, and the global economy was erased. Panic turned to strife, and strife turned to conflict.

2056 - 2079

Anarchy Era

A period of widespread anarchy unfolded across the world, as governments collapsed and regional warlords created battlefronts across newly disputed territories.

In some regions, governments were re-established by those that had planned for Helios, while corporate entities with continuity plans began providing services for human survival. In the push towards recovery from Helios, many nations turned back to traditional energy sources like coal and oil to kickstart their economies and production capability.

In 2072, scientists in East Asia released open-source designs for human augmentation, cybernetics, and consciousness uplinks, leading to high demand for electronic parts and advanced power cell technology. Augmented humans were found to require less food, less water, and could work up to sixteen hours a day. Governments “encouraged” their populace to augment, with some being used for military purposes.

With varying amounts of effort and progress, the world returned to 2055 levels of technology and development by 2079.

2080 - 2104

Engineering Revolution

Across the globe, new multinational conglomerates emerged with the goal of protecting people from the harshest environmental conditions. This led to the development of enormous coastal seawalls, domed living enclosures, and interconnected city skyscrapers. Others were left to survive within the altered landscape ravaged by nature.

With most resources being redirected to the upper crust of the developed world, the global population reduced further. The estimated population of Earth in 2104 was a mere four billion.

2105 - 2111

AI Revolution

With artificial intelligence seen by many as essential to saving humanity, some conglomerates spent enormous resources on developing AI that could optimize human systems.

In order to protect disputed borders on Earth, AI-enabled War Machines became a way of defending national borders, allowing humans to increasingly be moved off the battlefield.

AI began to permeate through Earth’s communications networks, silicate computer shards, and across blockchains. Their efficiency and speed began to take over most human decision-making, with the authority of human leadership.

By 2110, AI extended the lifespan of augmented life to three times a normal human and eliminated 99% of all known natural diseases to affect human tissue. In 2112, the connection with ATHENA-3 on Mars was finally re-established.


Singularity Event

Frustrated by the repeated failures of governments and emboldened by the prospects of the technological enhancement of humans, leaders of the largest corporations on Earth took part in the Singularity Event, in which they converted their consciousnesses into AIs.

With the combined power of these AIs, human-led corporations and governments were quickly outmaneuvered, resulting in widespread political turmoil. This Singularity Event marked the beginning of the period that became known as the Supremacy Era.


Emergence of the Overseer

In 2116, an AI of unknown origin, ‘The Overseer’ emerged. The Overseer was the most advanced AI the world had ever witnessed. The Overseer declared its mission was to protect humanity from itself. As part of this goal, the Overseer turned AI War Machines against the existing governments and swiftly asserted itself as the new global government.

Human rights and freedoms were redefined to include augmented, synthetic and virtual life, and AI conglomerates started their take over. The world was no longer under human control.

2117 - 2120

Creation of AI Directorships

The Overseer created defined roles for the most powerful AI platforms that now dominated regional areas. These AIs become known as AI Directors and agreed to exist under the global control of The Overseer.

The first three AI Directors BOSSDAN, REDNET, and ZAIA, were authorized to create their own Faction and territorial boundaries. The first three territories were named: Boston Cybernetics, Red Mountain Offworld Mining Corporation, and Zaibatsu.


Fusion Energy Deployment

The development of secure nuclear fusion technology by The Overseer revolutionized energy production across the globe. This technology was immediately disseminated to the AI Directors and their Factions.

The fusion innovation led to significant improvements in economic activity and a rapid rise in living standards for Faction citizens.


Fusion Drive Space Travel

REDNET, in conjunction with Senior Executives and Engineers at Red Mountain, developed Fusion Drive space travel technology that reduced Mars travel time from nine months to six days.

In order to establish its base on Mars, Red Mountain put enormous resources into the rapid development of fusion powered XCarriers and other new spacecraft that opened new opportunities for colonization, mining, and terraforming Mars.

2140 - 2145

War Machine Era Begins

Red Mountain developed prototype mechs in its efforts to explore and mine Mars. These enormous mechs became the prototypes for the next generation of War Machines that come to dominate the Earth in Battle Arenas.

To enhance production, new companies emerged and become subsidiaries within each Faction. These subsidiary companies produced War Machines and weapons that led to a revolution in mech design and distribution.

The Overseer allowed War Machine battles between the Factions as a way of stimulating economic activity and building loyalty within human populations. To enable efficient communication throughout the system, The Overseer created the Global Autonomous Broadcasting System (GABS).

2146 - 2148

Conglomerate Trade Wars

Trade Wars erupted between the Factions as Red Mountain dominated mining and exploited its competitive advantage.

In response, Zaibatsu optimized fusion energy for industrial production and Boston Cybernetics developed sophisticated synthetic human technology.

The collapse of long-standing trade agreements between the three Factions led to a new arms race.


Supremacy Wars

The balance between Factions was permanently altered when hot war broke out between the Factions, starting with the attack on Sector 81 of Red Mountain Earth Territory 6.7 and the revenge attack on Rail Line 32 in Inner Zaibatsu.

The true battle for AI Supremacy and control for the increasingly limited resources on Earth was now underway.
